Best Ab Machine

The Best Ab Machine Available – Buying Guide

One of the biggest challenges in the bodybuilding and fitness world has always been abs. They require much more work than the rest of the muscle groups since they are active in almost every exercise. The thing with abs is, the training is important, but if it’s not supported by a proper diet and nutrition, then you will just waste time. Isolating them is not an easy task, there are various types of workouts, but most of them fail in hitting the abs hard enough to speed up the progress. This is where engineers took different kinds of approaches to come up with machines specially made to get the abs as much defined as possible.

The best ab machines currently on the market

1. Editor’s pick - Perfect Fitness Ab Carver Pro

Designed to hit your core similarly to the plank exercise, the Ab Carver Pro is a great machine to burn the fat around the abdominal area and to make your abs stronger. Ab rollers are my favorite tools for ab exercises because they are simple and effective, and give my abdomen the burn that I can’t get in any other way.

What I liked about this one is a wider wheel than usual, what has given me excellent stability.
The handles are ergonomic and very comfortable to hold, they are made of rubber, and I haven’t had any inconvenient slippering. It came with foam kneepads to provide some extra comfort in the workout. Assembling the roller was an ease, and I didn’t quite like the spring mechanism that’s inside.

The mechanism is supported by carbon steel springs, what gives a resistance while you move, putting the abs to serious work. After the workout, I can tell I felt the burn both in my upper and lower abs. In addition to that, shoulders and arms got a bit toned as well. The wheels are slightly angled so you can perform side-to-side movements faster and hit the side muscles of the abdomen also.

    • Kneepads included
    • Comfortable handles
    • Hits lower and upper abs
    • Easy to assemble
    • The mechanism tends to make some noise
2. Runner Up - Wonder Core Smart

Last update on 2019-01-15 at 20:14 PST  / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API - Details

The versatility of this machine is excellent. You can perform numerous of different exercises for upper body with it. It’s very compact and takes up so little space. It was fun using it but, as a more advanced trainee, I found the exercises to be too easy for me. But, for a beginner, it’s an awesome tool. It helps you build the strength needed for push-ups, sit-ups, and you can even tone your legs with leg presses.

There is a possibility to adjust the level of resistance – when I turned it to max I started to feel the burn everywhere. The only thing you might have a problem with is your back for some time until those muscles get activated. It would be a good idea to start with the lowest setting even if you’re not a beginner, just to give your back some time to adjust.

As for the construction and build quality, it managed not to break even when I gave it to my heavier friend to give it a try. Overall I had a comfortable experience with it, but the seat could be a bit bigger, maybe it’s just me.

    • Hits your entire core
    • Easy to store
    • Adjustable resistance
    • Comfortable
    • Versatile
  • The seat could be a bit bigger
  • Might hit your back if you’re not an advanced trainee
3. Budget pick - Fitnessery Ab Roller

Out of all ab machines available, ab rollers are the cheapest ones. While searching for the most accessible one, I came across the Fitnessery Ab Roller. Its price can’t be matched, and the quality that comes with it was pretty satisfying.

The grips are comfortable, and they’re not slippery; the wheel is made of plastic (what I didn’t like), but for this price, you can’t expect something else. What is good about the wheel though, is it has a rubber cover, so it should prevent any inconvenience that could occur due to slippery surfaces.

It came disassembled in the package, and you get three parts to put together: handles, wheel and steel bar. Assembling it is a very easy task, took me no more than 5 minutes. One thing also included in the package is a knee pad to make the stretching even more comfortable. Also, there are two Ebooks, which will be a great help for the beginners.

The only thing that I didn’t like is the width of the wheel. It’s too narrow for me, and I would like it to be a bit wider for better stability.

  • Very good price
  • Easy to assemble
  • Decent quality for the price
  • Comfortable grips
    • Narrow wheel
4. Upgrade pick - XMark 12 Position Ergonomic Adjustable Decline Ab Bench

Last update on 2019-01-16 at 06:41 PST  / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API - Details

Now for some serious training – there is this Ab Bench that I got some time ago. If you want to get to another level, this is your next big challenge. With this bench, you can put a serious work on your abs, side muscles and even back if you like. It has 12 vertical height holes for the angle adjustment and the resistance. The leg rollers have an ergonomic design which helps a lot to reduce the pressure put on the back.

It features a handle in the middle of the rollers, and it’s definitely a plus when you’re on an HIIT or superset workout. When the fatigue hits your abs, you can help yourself stand up by grabbing the handle. The construction is made of metal, pretty sturdy and stable, with a powder coating to prevent rust and to provide more durability.

The bench has a thick cushion, and I noticed it from the first use. I know how to recognize the good cushion immediately because I had a few cheaper benches that had poorly-made cushions (I felt the metal construction under my back). That ruined every workout for me and disabled my concentration completely.

I’m a little bigger guy, and this bench wasn’t that stable for me. I tend to have explosive workouts, and it was moving from side to side. I don’t think you will experience that, but it’s important to be said.

  • Adjustable
  • Comfortable roller pads
  • Comfortable bench cushion
  • Good construction
  • Provides hard core exercises
  • Big dimensions
  • Not that stable as I expected
5. Ab Rocket Twister Abdominal Trainer - The Best Machine for an Ab Isolation

Last update on 2019-01-15 at 15:03 PST  / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API - Details

This design has a lot of potentials, and I loved the idea of the possibility to work on both upper and bottom abs, and I could isolate the side muscles and work on the waist as well. There is something that needs improvement though; the seat area should get some adjustment solution since not all of the people will fit in it. I say not all, but most of the people will, for me it was just fine.

The workout on this machine was extremely effective, if my waist could cry, it would do so at the end of the training. I love that twisting feature; I could finally isolate my waste and burn the fat around it.
There are also three levels of resistance, so you can make the workout even harder when you feel you’re ready for a challenge.

The pads on the back are comfortable, and it feels like a massage when you work your abs. That is a big plus for beginners, the rollers help you to pull yourself up and ease the pressure on your back as well.
For everyone who needs instructions, there is a DVD with workouts included. The material used for the construction is lightweight, durable and putting it together required no effort at all.

  • Versatile
  • Adjustable
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to put together
  • Durable
  • Comes with a workout DVD
    • Some people might not fit in the chair

Types Of Ab Machines

Best Ab Machine
1. Ab Roller

Ab rollers are designed to target your entire core and especially abs. They consist of a wheel which you rotate on the floor by pushing it front and back. There is a spring mechanism inside that pushes you in a starting position, and the point here is to resist that force and go back as slowly as possible.

2. Ab Belt

Ab belts are something that I wouldn’t ever use, but some people seem to like them, so I’m going to mention them as well. They use electric stimulation to shock your muscles and make them contract. Very unnatural but there are claims that this solution is effective.

3. Ab Glider

Gliders consist of metal construction and the pad that can be moved up and down. The idea is that you grab the handles and use your abs to get up and down. Some gliders have a 180-degree range of motion as well.

4. Ab Benches

The Ab Bench is a classic machine that covers many exercises like crunches, leg raising, twists, etc. They are all adjustable pretty much all the same. The dimensions are what makes them apart. The best ones are wider and longer.

5. Roman Chairs

One of my personal favorites is the Roman Chair. And probably the most challenging machine you can get. From my experience, the most strength is built on roman chairs, when you achieve the power for hyperextensions, then the real fun starts.

6. Other Types

As I wrote at the beginning, there are a lot of solutions and designs for ab machines. There are some that you use while laying on your back, the others use twisting motion, and some have movements just like the regular sit-ups. It all comes to what part of the abdomen the machine is targeting the most.

What to Pay Attention to

Best Ab Machine

Due to the simplicity of the ab exercises, only a few points are important to be checked while you’re evaluating the machines.

1. Versatility

The best machines are the ones that can hit as many muscles of your abdomen as they can. The possibility to perform multiple exercises is always a bonus. The example of the versatility of the abs machines is an ab wheel, for example; you can train your abs, shoulders, back, and arms. There are also the machines that offer the movements in the waist area as well.

2. Durability

Durability is important in any item you buy. Nobody likes to waste money on the stuff that doesn't last long enough. To determine the durability of the ab machine, check it’s frame, base, padding, and joints.
To make sure the frame is not going to corrode, look for a good powder finish. Check the material of the frame; there are light ones and heavy ones. Of course, the heavy ones supposed to be more stable, but it will be a hassle to move it around and put it away. If you ever encounter the frame that is light and sturdy, don’t think twice and get it right away.

3. Comfort

For the maximum comfort look for ergonomic designs, the materials of the cushions, and the thickness of the pads, seats, etc. As for machines like ab rollers, pay attention to the material and design of the handles. When you’re browsing for machines that involve the back movement, be sure to check out the back support the machine provides. If your back gets fatigued and not your abs, then what’s the point of the Ab Machine?

6. Adjustability

To be sure that you will be able to start as a beginner and move your way up, or if you want to share the machine with someone else, make sure that the machine has resistance levels and adjustments.
It’s a good feature to have to make the most of a single machine you can.

7. Setup and Storage

Storage is mostly the number one problem with home exercise machines and equipment. It would be that it can be set up as easy as possible, I would ditch a machine in a heartbeat if I have to go through the hassle every time before I start the workout.

The Best Ab Machine You Can Get Is…

Best Ab Machine

Honestly, I don’t think there is a better home solution for Ab workout than an Ab Roller. It’s small, and you can put it away anywhere you like, and the most importantly it hits your entire core. That’s why I chose to declare Perfect Fitness Ab Carver Pro a clear winner in this competition. Out of all ab rollers I used, this one was the best, the best grip and the stability that I haven’t encountered before.

Most of the Ab Rollers feature flat handles which are classic and ok for most of the people, but some people, me included, find that flat grip is very uncomfortable for my wrists. That’s why I loved the ergonomic design that this Ab Roller has. When I don’t focus on the pain on my wrists, I can focus more on my core and complete a much effective workout than I could do otherwise.

There is, of course, the noise that’s caused by the spring mechanism that gets on my nerves, but I usually workout with headphones so that problem was easy to eliminate.
